The History of Massage Oils
Massage oils have been used in the art of massage for centuries. As
early as 1000 BC, Homer wrote of using an oily substance while
massaging. Other great thinkers, including Plato and Socrates, also
wrote of using specially anointed during massage to help ease pain.
Massage oils were, however, used long before Homer was even alive.
Experts believe early man used some form of massage oil to treat pain
because a natural human instinct is to rub an area that hurts. For
example, if you bump your head, you are likely to immediately rub the
area in an attempt to make if feel better. Most likely, it didn’t take
early man long to discover that rubbing certain plants on a painful area
helped to further ease the pain – thus being the start of what we now
know as massage oil.
Around the same time Homer was writing about massage oils, Japanese
monks were also engaging in massage, coupled with special medicines, to
encourage the body’s healing process. Similar cases have been documented
in China, India, Greece, and many Native American tribes. Even ancient
Egyptians have left behind drawings of people massaging each other’s
feet.
