Greece and the Art of Massage
Ancient Greece’s Hippocrates, also known as the “father of medicine,”
documented the use of herbs combined with oils and massage techniques as
a means of treating a variety of medical conditions. Hippocrates
believed so strongly in the medicine of massage and massage oils that he
is quoted as saying, “anyone wishing to study medicine must master the
art of massage.”
Ancient Greek woman also used aromatic massage oils as part of their
beauty regiment, using them to treat their skin and face. Indeed, even
the bravest Greek warriors valued massage with massage oils, proclaiming
it to be a “welcome relief to exhausted war heroes.”
