Healing and Massage Oils
Massage and massage oils began to regain popularity in the 1500’s when
French surgeon Ambroise Pare, personal physician to four of France’s
kings, wrote a book describing the healing effects of massage. Yet, few
advances took place in the art of massage until 1813. This was when Pehr
Henrik Ling opened the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics in Sweden.
Ling developed a series of massage techniques that became known as
Swedish massage.
In the late 1850’s, George and Charles Taylor, New York physicians who
had studied in Sweden, introduced scientific massage therapy to the
United States. Yet, message did not begin to be embraced until the
1960’s, when American’s started to develop a stronger interest in
protecting the environment and also began looking for natural ways to
heal their bodies. Since that time, there has been an increasing
interest in the use of massage and massage oils as a means of healing
and relaxation in the United States.
There are still some skeptics in the world of medicine who desire
scientific research to support the use of massage for healing. For this
reason, the ‘Touch Research Institute’ was established at the University
of Miami School of Medicine in 1992. The purpose of this institute is to
study massage and how it applies to science and medicine. The institute
has shown that massage can stimulate weight gain in premature infants.
It can also lessen or eliminate symptoms of depression, decrease stress
hormones, reduce pain and even improve the immune systems of people with
a variety of medical conditions. Therefore, massage is steadily becoming
recognized a practical alternative or addition to medicine.
