How to Give a Great Massage

All right! So you have your oil, your area, your atmosphere and your partner.. your partner is stretched out and comfy and waiting for you to start. The lights are comfortable, the music is low and you’re wondering what to do next.

Start by pouring a small amount of oil into the palm of one hand. Rub your hands lightly together to spread the oil and warm it. Starting at the shoulders, lightly massage the oil onto the body using smooth, gentle strokes. This is your testing phase – while you massage, you can judge how quickly the oil is absorbed by your partner’s skin and when you’ll need to add more.

Now place your hands flat on either side of the spine at about hip level. Using light, steady pressure, slide both hands up along your partner’s back to the shoulder blades, then bring them out along each shoulder. Slide your hands back down along your partner’s rib cage and to their hips, back where you started. Repeat eight or ten times, slowly. This light massage technique will prepare the muscles for deeper massaging.

You can use a kneading technique with both hands, working up one side of the spine and back down the other. Curl your fingers under to knead, using your knuckles and the heels of your hands. Remember that you’re massaging the muscles, not the skin. Press and roll your hands, then move an inch or so forward and do the same, moving inch by inch up toward the shoulders.

From there on out, let instinct take over. You’ll be able to tell when you need more oil by the feel of your hands on the skin. Just enjoy – and make it fun for your partner as well.
