Attending massage therapy school, you
will learn what a massage is, how to give one, and how it helps people. A massage is a special treatment given to various parts of the body. It involves rubbing, stroking, slapping, and kneading the body to relieve muscle spasms or stiffness. It can help relieve cramps, anxiety, and tension. In massage therapy school, you will also learn the connection that touch or massage therapy has to memory. If a person can relax and give in to receiving a massage, his or her mind will be at ease and their short-term memory will improve. Massage therapy helps the client in two basic ways. A basic massage involves stoking, rubbing, and kneading. It stimulates the flow of physical and emotional healing power. The physical massage makes the muscles relax and not feel tight. The stimulating element in the massage allows the person to feel the relaxing or healing power being received. There are so many different types of massages that most schools only concentrate on one. It's up to you to learn different types of massage and master them so that you’re prepared for starting your own business or finding a job. Massages originating from the East include shiatsu, acupuncture, and polarity. They all work with the client's lifeforce energy and help them release negative energy while the therapist rebalances them and gives them positive energy. Many Eastern types of massage work on the person's energy fields and do not involve any physical touching at all. Some Western types of massage are Swedish, Escalen, neuromuscular therapy, trager, and deep tissue massages that help release tension from the muscles. Western massage techniques are based on an understanding of the physical body and, in particular, its muscles. The descriptions of the different types of massages generally include some of the basic strokes or rubbing techniques and add a twist to them. For example, gentle and relaxing Swedish massage includes long strokes and circular kneading movements. Lotions and oils are also used. Aromatherapy massage is similar to Swedish massage, but it uses specific scented oils that address certain skin conditions. Hot stone massage is a unique method in which smooth, heated stones are applied to certain points on the arms, legs, chest, and back to relieve muscle tension and balance the body's energy. For a deep tissue massage, the massage therapist generally uses slower strokes that often make people feel sore for a couple of days afterwards. Shiatsu is a form of Japanese massage that uses finger pressure in a soothing, stretching rhythm. The pressure is firm but relaxing. Tai massage incorporates yoga. There are plenty of other types that you can learn and master to evolve your profession.
