Massage, one of the oldest and
simplest of all therapeutic forms, involves stroking, pressing, and
kneading different areas of the body to promote well-being and relieve
pain. The benefits of a good massage are numerous. It not only stimulates and relaxes the body but also tones it by acting on the soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Massage largely affects muscles just beneath the skin, but if done regularly and in the right manner, its benefits extend to the deeper layers of the muscles and even to the internal organs. Applied under the right conditions, it strengthens the entire body and reduces its susceptibility to strains and injuries from excessive tension and structural weaknesses of the body. Massage therapy stimulates the circulation of both the blood and the lymphatic system, which runs parallel to the circulatory system. Since the lymphatic system eliminates waste material from the body, massage helps clean the body of toxins. Massage therapy also reduces fatigue, calms the nervous system, and replenishes energy. Giving a Massage What is the correct way to give a massage? First, choose the right equipment for providing effective massage therapy. You need to have a firm, padded surface such as a massage table. Placing a foam mattress on the floor will also work. You might want to use additional cushions or pads to support the body on the massage surface. Next, choose a massage oil. Some popular oils include soy, peach, apricot kernel, grape seed, sunflower, almond, olive, and peanut. You might also want to add a few drops of an essential oil. Lavender is relaxing, while jasmine is stimulating. There are many different essential oils and blends of oils for different purposes. You might want to have several on hand. Keep towels and perhaps a light cotton blanket handy to cover those portions of the body not being currently worked on. For optimum benefit, it’s important to set the scene for massage. The right environment will enhance the effects of the massage. Soft lighting and relaxing music are soothing additions. The temperature of the room should be comfortable, not too cool or too warm. Be sure to select a time when you will not be interrupted or have to rush. Have your client or partner wear loose clothes and no jewelry or other accessories. Tie the hair up if it is long. Before beginning the massage, make sure your hands are clean and your nails are cut short. Do not perform a massage wearing a wristwatch, bracelet, or rings. Massage in an upward movement for one to one and a quarter hour. A good massage has the potential to restore an individual to his or her best physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
