Tips for Buying Massage Oils

Keep in mind that, like so many other things, you get what you pay for. Purchase high quality bases and supplies to make your own superior products. Some things to watch for when purchasing essential and carrier oils, whether in store or online are:

Read labels carefully. Especially if you’re purchasing massage oils for therapeutic uses, it’s important to know exactly what you’re getting. The best way to be sure that you’re getting a high quality, therapeutic grade of bergamot, for instance, is to look for the latin name on the label, as well as the parts of the plant that the oil was pressed from. If you find an oil at a far lower price than expected, it’s very possible that the oil is from a second or third distillation, when the plant parts have lost much of the nutrients that you’re paying for. Read labels carefully to be sure that you get exactly what you’re paying for.

Only buy products in opaque or dark glass bottles. Many essential oils degrade with exposure to sunlight. Others may interact with the chemicals in plastics. By purchasing oils only in dark brown or dark blue glass bottles, you can be certain that the quality of the oil has been maintained since bottling.
